Canada Urged to Concentrate on Drug Prevention and Treatment by 23 Countries
Drug Prevention Network of Canada
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 22, 2006
The International Task Force on Strategic Drug Planning met in London, England to amend and adopt a strategic plan for countries to use as a guideline in developing national drug strategies.
“Canada had five representatives at that conference including representatives from the Drug Prevention Network of Canada” said Randy White its President and member of the International task force. “We believe the timing of this document is perfect as the Conservative government is developing a national drug strategy now and needs to know many countries are recommending a focus on prevention and treatment”.
“The report urges the government to focus on the root of the problem [demand] and have a universal goal and a bottom line standard of accountability” says DPNC Vice President and International Task Force member, Ben Jenkins of Halifax. “The policy document says nations and communities must have comprehensive multilevel prevention plans, a community base and a clear and unambiguous message to be communicated” says Jenkins.
“The report makes 15 specific treatment practice recommendations, 11 on specific justice and enforcement practices, and 24 successful prevention practices that have been proven world wide. If that is not enough on which to base Canada’s new drug strategy, I don’t know what else will do” concluded White.
