MEXICO CITY, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's anti-narcotics police have seized 8.14 tons of marijuana in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, a record seizure for the state, the Federal Attorney General's Office (PGR) said on Monday.
The drug was seized in the early hours of Monday morning in a truck carrying fertilizer on the Monterrey-Allende road near Santa Catarina, a municipality within the metropolitan area of Monterrey, capital of Nuevo Leon. The drug was hidden among the fertilizer in a bid to disguise its distinct odor, The PGR said that the truck started its journey in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, and was heading for Tamaulipas, a northern state on the border with the United States. Officers from the Federal Investigation Agency (AFI), which is part of the PGR, arrested two persons on the charge of drug smuggling.
In 2001, Mexican police seized 18 tons of drugs in Tamaulipas, the largest ever for the Latin American country. Enditem
