A police officer says some drug users may be inadvertently taking the highly addictive drug crystal meth.
RCMP Sgt. Bill Dwyer, a member of a working group on crystal meth, said illegal street drugs sold in the province are now commonly laced with crystal meth.
Dwyer said cocaine and ecstasy users should be aware that they could be consuming crystal meth, considered one of the most addictive of street drugs.
"The drug manufacturers themselves are using crystal meth in the manufacture of those drugs, to make the drugs cheaper and make them more addictive," said Dwyer.
"Unsuspecting purchasers of those drugs are thinking they are getting cocaine or E [ecstasy], when in fact they're getting crystal meth, or meth."
Dwyer says the working group will launch a public awareness campaign in a couple of weeks to warn people of the dangers of using crystal meth.
The provincial government is also preparing rules that will restrict the sale of some cold medicines.
